Native to southern Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, Calendula officinalis is a plant from the sunflower family (Asteraceae), also known as marigold or pot marigold. The plant is now grown globally as it tolerates many growing conditions and has adapted to different climates around the world.
The calendula flower has been used in Mediterranean countries since at least the 12th century. In some of the earliest medical writings, the plant appears recommended for treating problems of the digestive tract.Calendula was also used to treat some skin conditions - the flowers were applied to cuts and wounds to stop bleeding, prevent infection and speed healing.
In traditional medicine, pot marigold petals have been made into various ointments and extracts, and used for several ailments, including fever, muscle spasms, treating sore throat and mouth, menstrual cramps and stomach ulcers. It has also been used as a culinary plant and has remained a garden favourite for centuries.
Historically, it has been a very important plant in medicine throughout many cultures. It’s been written that marigold flowers were used at battlefields on open wounds due to the antihemorrhagic and antiseptic properties – the flowers when dressing wounds, would help to promote healing and prevent infection.
